Uruguay announced plans for its first green hydrogen plant, Kahirós, in Fray Bentos, which will cost US$38 million and is expected to start operating in 2026. The Kahirós project includes 8,000 solar panels, a 2 MW electrolyser that can produce 36 kg of hydrogen per hour and a truck refueling station.

In the initial phase, Kahirós will produce 77 tons of green hydrogen per year, consuming 7.2 GW of energy per year and 4,200 liters of water per day. The government estimates that the project will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 870 tons per year.

In order to achieve its net zero emissions target and promote domestic economic development, Uruguay plans to build 18 GW of renewable energy and 9 GW of electrolysers, produce 1 million tons per year of green hydrogen by 2040, and create US$1.3 billion in exports.
