The World Bank Board has approved US$660 million in funding to support the expansion of Turkey’s low-carbon railway network under the “Eastern Turkey Middle Corridor Railway Development Project.” This initiative aims to enhance freight transportation efficiency, boost exports, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The project will replace diesel-powered trains with electric ones and construct a 660-kilometer fully electrified modern railway line connecting Divriği and Kars, near the Georgian border.

The electrification and modernization of this corridor will significantly improve regional connectivity and align with Turkey’s efforts to promote sustainable transportation and reduce its carbon footprint.

This investment underscores the World Bank’s commitment to supporting Turkey’s green transition and strengthening its export-driven economy.
