Latin American steelmakers propose strategic alliance with US

19 Feb 2025 15:01 reported by Windy Wu

A A A
Latin American steelmakers, led by the Latin American Steel Association (Alacero), are pushing for a regional alliance with the US to counter China’s overcapacity and unfair trade practices. They argue that integrating steel supply chains within the Americas would enhance market stability, reduce reliance on China, and support lower-carbon production.

Alacero criticized the US for imposing 25% steel tariffs on Latin American countries, despite their own struggles against cheap Chinese imports.

Countries like Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina have strengthened anti-dumping measures but still face difficulties with subsidized imports or those priced below market value. Therefore, the proposed alliance could boost regional trade security and respond to these countries' efforts in coordinating through bilateral talks.
