ArcelorMittal South Africa seeking financial backers

24 Mar 2025 14:49 reported by Ana Lee

ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) has postponed the planned closure of its long products business in March or early April as it is in talks with certain parties for a capital injection.

AMSA is communicating with stakeholders, including the government, to discuss funding support and related matters. If no agreement can be reached on funding support, delaying the closure of the long product business will not be feasible.

AMSA said that the closure process of its long products business has not been stopped and the management method will be appropriately adjusted based on the ongoing funding discussions.

In addition to financial support, AMSA also made requests to the South African government, including abolishing the export tax on scrap steel, imposing tariffs on imported steel, and reducing electricity and rail transportation costs to improve competitiveness.
