China’s continued steel production to affect global steel market stability

China's steel production and exports have continued to grow so far this year. In the first two months of this year, China’s crude steel production was 166.3 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 1.5%, but steel production increased to 224 million tons, up by 4.7% year on year.

In 2024, China’s steel exports reached 110.7 million tons, the second highest in history. Several countries in the world stepped up anti-dumping (AD) and countervailing duties (CVD) investigations, but China took advantage of the window period to expand exports.

In the January-February period, China’s steel exports reached around 16.97 million tons, a year-on-year rise of 6.7%. As global trade protectionism intensifies, the market may be difficult to stabilize if China does not implement production cuts.
