Turkey & US strengthen trade dialogue amid rising tariffs

Turkey and the US have escalated their trade tensions, with both countries forming a working group to discuss tariff issues. The group met in Ankara to maintain close communication and coordinate necessary actions, with a focus on enhancing bilateral trade relations.

On April 2, the US imposed a 10% reciprocal tariff on Turkish goods, following which both nations began talks on April 12 to reach their target of a US$100 billion trade volume.

The US is Turkey's second-largest export market, with bilateral trade totaling US$35.2 billion in 2024. However, the global trade environment is increasingly unpredictable, prompting both countries to take more proactive measures to diversify and strengthen trade ties.

Before the implementation of the 232 Tariff in 2018, the US accounted for 15% of Turkey's steel exports, but this share has significantly decreased since the tariff was imposed.
