IEA: Global energy-related CO2 emissions hit historic high in 2024

23 Apr 2025 16:40 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global energy-related CO2 emissions hit an all-time high of 37.8 Gt in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 0.8%.

CO2 from fuel combustion rose by 1% or 357 million tons, while industrial process emissions fell by 2.3% or 62 million tons. This increase was less than global GDP growth (+3.2%), resuming the decades-long trend of decoupling emissions growth from economic growth, which was disrupted in 2021.

Emissions grew in emerging and developing nations, international aviation, and marine bunkers, offsetting declines in developed countries, including the EU, the US, and Japan. Emerging and developing economies had a 1.5% rise in their energy-related CO2 emissions, due to growing energy demand, while the figure in China increased by 0.4%, most of which was seen in the first quarter.
