South Africa seeks to import US LNG for next decade in return for duty-free quota on metal & car exports

South Africa has proposed a new trade deal to the US in response to US President Trump’s trade policies. Under the agreement, South Africa will import US liquefied natural gas (LNG) over the next decade, while the US would replace high tariffs on South African steel, aluminum, and vehicles with a quota system.

South Africa plans to buy 75-100 million cubic meters of LNG annually, worth US$900 million to US$1.2 billion, equivalent to US$9 billion to US$12 billion over the proposed period.

In return, it seeks annual US export quotas of 385,000 tons for steel and 132,000 tons for aluminum, plus duty-free exports of 40,000 vehicles per year.
