A study conducted by the Latin American Steel Association (Alacero) and the Mexican National Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) found that Chinese steel imports in Latin America grew by 233% over the last 15 years.

The two leading steel industry associations in Latin America emphasized that between 2008 and 2024, Chinese indirect steel exports to Latin America soared by 338% due to unfair trade resulting from both direct and indirect subsidies.

Therefore, they indicated that it is urgent to implement an industrial development policy that promotes the regional integration of value chains, with the aim of protecting the 1.4 million direct and indirect jobs that depend on the steel industry in the region.
