Brazil threatens retaliatory tariffs against US

11 Jul 2025 14:49 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated that Brazil will consider reciprocal tariffs if US President Donald Trump implements a proposed 50% charge on Brazilian imports. Lula emphasized Brazil's sovereignty, saying the country will not accept any form of tutelage.

He disputed Trump's assertion of an unfair trade relationship, citing Brazil's long-term trade deficit with the US, which Finance Minister Fernando Haddad placed at more than $400 billion in goods and services over the past 15 years. The US is Brazil's second-largest trading partner, importing $40.3 billion in Brazilian goods in 2024.

Brazilian industry and agribusiness groups are calling for diplomatic negotiations to avoid tariffs that could severely disrupt production and supply chains.
