China’s Ansteel develops world-first high-strength steel for locomotives

China's Angang Steel Company Limited (Ansteel) recently announced the successful development of a new high-strength steel for locomotives, a global first. The steel plate, which is 100mm thick and rated at 460MPa, can withstand temperatures as low as -50°C.

This product overcomes long-standing challenges in producing thick, high-strength steel, such as segregation and inconsistent material properties. Through composition design and process improvement, Ansteel has created a material with exceptional strength and toughness, providing a critical material for high-reliability railway equipment. This breakthrough significantly raises the operational safety of locomotives in extremely cold regions.
