South Africa to release preliminary steel tariff review findings

19 Aug 2025 13:10 reported by Stanley Wang

South Africa’s government will publish the preliminary findings of its steel tariff review next week, aiming to shield the local industry from rising imports. The review was launched in March by the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC).

The steel sector has been hit by imports, mainly from China, as well as weak demand, energy shortages, and logistics issues. US tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump have further disrupted trade flows.

The commission received about 150 responses, with more than 600 tariff codes under review. The process will assess whether existing duties are effective, if more products need controls, and whether safeguard measures are required.
