SMS group has successfully finished a major maintenance project for the 2050-millimeter hot strip mill at Baoshan Iron & Steel (Baosteel) in Shanghai, China. The project involved a complete overhaul of the mill’s gearboxes, which was completed during Baosteel's scheduled annual maintenance in 2025 without any additional downtime.

The work included the online measurements, disassembly, offline inspection, and replacement of the bearings on the input and output shafts. SMS group provided comprehensive support, from initial planning to on-site installation guidance and commissioning, ensuring a smooth and efficient process.

This successful partnership continues a long history of collaboration, with the original hot rolling line commissioned in 1989 and a slab sizing press installed in 2013, both from SMS. The hot rolling line consistently exceeds its designed capacity, producing more than five million tons annually.
