Turkish steelmakers warn of threat from dumped imports as output declines

11 Sep 2025 16:20 reported by Stanley Wang

A A A
Turkish steelmakers are urging urgent action to address the impact of dumped imports, warning of reduced capacity utilization and declining investment. Cheap and subsidized steel from China and East Asia created unfair competition in the market.

Rising exports to Turkey from China, India, and Far Eastern countries hurt local output, with the nation’s 60 million-ton steel capacity remaining largely underused. Imports from China alone have increased tenfold since 2020, discouraging new investments and undermining sustainable growth. Concerns also extend to quality, with reports of inconsistent standards and unreliable certification in imported metal products.

From January to July, Turkey’s steel output fell 0.9% year-on-year to about 21.48 million tons, while pig iron production declined by 12.5% to 5.29 million tons.
