Following the shutdown of its Villa Constitución plant, the Argentine steelmaker Acindar began importing steel from China. Matías Ruffini, a member of the Internal Commission of the Villa Constitución plant and also a member of the local Metalworkers' Union (UOM), noted that Acindar, a subsidiary of the multinational ArcelorMittal, is now importing Chinese steel and selling it in the domestic market, following the shutdown of production lines and the suspension of approximately 500 workers at the plant.
The Argentine steel sector fears that this will become a structural decision, given that if these imports increase, the plant will eventually close. The union is demanding concrete responses from Acindar and the Argentine government regarding this Chinese dumping.
