The European Steel Association (EUROFER) welcomed EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič’s pledge to present new steel import protective measures by mid-October, replacing existing ones. EUROFER President Henrik Adam stressed the measures must safeguard EU steel capacity and investments for geo-economic autonomy.

Šefčovič also vowed to work with the US on global steel overcapacity, including resolving 50% US tariffs on EU steel. These were discussed in a meeting with European steel CEOs, focusing on the industry crisis and decarbonization challenges. He said the EC aims to expand EU-US trade cooperation on steel and adopt tough defenses, targeting global overcapacity by tracking import origins.
