Turkey imposes 25-30% new import duties on automobiles

Turkey has introduced new taxes on imported cars to protect its domestic auto industry and address its current account deficit. Published in the Official Gazette, the regulations apply to passenger vehicles from outside the EU or countries without free trade agreements.

The new policy sets a minimum tax on all imported cars. Conventional and hybrid vehicles will be taxed at 25% or at least $6,000, whichever is greater, while plug-in hybrids will face a 30% tax or at least $7,000, whichever is higher. Fully electric vehicles will be taxed at 30% or a minimum of $8,500, with the greater value being applied.

The Trade Ministry said that this policy is a necessary response to rising global protectionism and a significant increase in imports. The new rules will take effect 60 days after September 22.
