US to cancel over $13 billion in clean energy funds while pushing for oil and gas

The US Department of Energy said on September 24 that it plans to cancel over US$13 billion in funds pledged by the Biden administration to incentivize solar, wind, batteries, and EVs. It was unclear which specific funds were affected, and the department did not provide details yet.

California Governor Gavin Newsom sharply criticized the decision, saying it handed clean energy leadership to China. On September 23, President Trump said at the U.N. General Assembly that climate change is a “con job” and emphasized boosting oil and gas output while cutting renewable subsidies.

A study by advocacy group E2 warned that jobs in solar, wind, and other clean energy sectors, already growing three times faster than the US average in 2024, could be lost due to Trump’s policy on energy.
