EU to target 25-50% tariffs on Chinese steel and related goods

According to a report from Handelsblatt, the European Commission aims to levy 25%-50% tariffs on Chinese steel and related products in the next few weeks. However, there is no comment from the European Commission yet.

Earlier this month, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the plans to introduce a new mechanism to limit steel imports as well as protect domestic producers. The global overcapacity brings impacts on industry margins and green investment. She confirmed the EU will introduce a new long-term trade instrument to replace existing steel safeguards, set to expire in mid-2026.

Since the beginning of 2024, around 54 tariffs and other trade restrictions have been imposed on Chinese steel. Analysts warn that continued growth in exports may trigger additional protective measures from global markets.
