Canada has proposed to lift the tariffs on certain steel and aluminum imports from the US and China as trade relief. It aims to support local businesses for those who are impacted by the trade war.

The Ministry of Finance granted exemptions for certain steel and aluminum from China in an amendment to order to cancel the extra taxes on those Chinese imports from 2024. There will be more detailed information to be released on November 5, 2025.

The Ministry also granted exemptions for steel and aluminum products from the US, covering healthcare, national security, manufacturing, agriculture, and food packaging sectors. The Canadian finance minister said those exemptions were specific goods that must be imported into Canada to supply chains and not affect the amount of counter-tariffs collected.

However, the Canadian Steel Manufacturers Association voiced concern over the decision to extend broad tariff exemptions for US manufacturers by another two months, noting that Canadian steel producers continue to face restricted access to the US market.
