Steel of West Virginia closes 1950s vintage melt shop, cutting 100 jobs

Steel of West Virginia (SWVA) announced it will close its 1950s vintage melt shop in Cabell County, resulting in the elimination of approximately 100 jobs from its workforce of more than 600.

The decision allows SWVA to focus investment on its two rolling mills in Huntington, which company officials said have a strong demand outlook due to current US trade policy and onshoring trends.

SWVA plans a US$30 million, multi-year investment campaign to enhance efficiency, productivity, and quality at the rolling mills, determining that the vintage melt shop has reached the end of its life cycle.

General Manager Michael Winarta said that optimizing rolling mill operations using domestic steel billets will support continued operations and meet customer demand.
