India's steel ministry launches SARAL SIMS to ease rules for small importers

India's Ministry of Steel has introduced measures to simplify steel imports and ease compliance. The new SARAL Steel Import Monitoring System (SARAL SIMS) has been launched, reducing the number of required fields for importer registration from 56 to 20.

To fast-track trade, the government removed the requirement for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for importing steel grades not covered by any Quality Control Order (QCO).

Furthermore, the QCO exemption period was extended. Certain steel products receive an extra five months of exemption, while stainless steel products receive an additional three months.

The SARAL SIMS allows for a single registration number for multiple consignments during the financial year without the need for a consignment-wise SIMS number. The total volume ceiling is 500 tons for the current fiscal year 2025-26 and 1,000 tons for the next fiscal year 2026-27.
