US demands EU re-evaluate tech rules for steel tariff relief

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that Europe should re-evaluate its regulations on major technology companies to secure lower US tariffs on its steel and aluminum exports. This demand came as US and EU officials met in Brussels to discuss the current trade framework.

The existing deal, reached in July, set European product tariffs at 15% but did not provide the EU with the expected relief on metal duties, which remain at 50% for many products.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer confirmed the US wants Europe to implement promised concessions on American goods before granting exemptions. Both US officials stressed that changes to Europe's digital services taxes and the Digital Markets Act are key prerequisites for adjusting metal tariffs.

However, EU officials maintain that their digital rules are not negotiable.
