Growing steel imports in Mexico threaten USMCA compliance, experts urge 50% tariff

1 Dec 2025 14:37 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Currently, Mexico has experienced a significant increase in its steel imports, reaching approximately 16 million tons, which represents almost half of the domestic market.

This growing influx of steel into Mexico has drawn the attention of experts and institutions in the country; they are concerned that this phenomenon would become a barrier to the full implementation of the regulations established in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Experts propose that the Mexican federal government implement a tariff policy similar to that of the United States, imposing a 50% tariff on steel imports, to strengthen the protection of both the national and regional steel markets under the USMCA.
