Mexico moves toward new tariffs of 10-50% on imports from non-FTA countries

Mexico is pushing a sweeping tariff overhaul that would impose 10%-50% duties on imports from countries without trade agreements.

Backed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, the plan aims to protect strategic sectors through broad tariff barriers. The committee-approved proposal covers 1,463 products, including 249 steel and 94 automotive items.

Supporters say the higher duties will curb market distortions and strengthen the domestic industry, while officials believe it could encourage the US to lower tariffs on Mexican metals. Some experts warn, however, that steep tariff increases may disrupt supply chains heavily reliant on Chinese components.
