Mexico fast-tracks approval of higher tariffs on imports from non-FTA partners

Mexico’s Senate has approved amendments to the General Import and Export Tariffs Law (LIGIE), imposing tariffs of 10% to 50% on imports from countries without trade agreements with Mexico.

The measure covers 1,463 products across 16 industrial sectors, including 249 steel products, such as steel coils, rebar, wire rod, steel plates, sections, and pipes, and 94 automotive items.

Proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, the bill was swiftly passed following approval by the lower house. Lawmakers said the move aims to prevent economic disruptions that could block strategic industries and the attraction of high-value investment.

The tariffs will take effect on January 1 for one year.
