Tata Steel completes major excavation for Port Talbot EAF project

24 Dec 2025 15:20 reported by Lily Nguyen

A A A
Tata Steel has excavated the site for its new Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) at Port Talbot, removing over 360,000 tons of material to prepare for conveyor and infrastructure foundations.

More than 1,000 piles, reaching depths of up to 28 meters, will be installed to support the Fume Extract Plant and Consteel (Conveyor) Structure.

Demolition teams have cleared redundant buildings, including the old substation, compressor house, and mechanical workshop, from the site.

Much of the excavated material has been processed and recycled into aggregate for piling mats that will support the next construction phase.

In the coming weeks, teams will complete drainage installations and extend piling platforms into the basic oxygen steelmaking (BOS) plant, where the main furnace will be located.
