SMS group expands green steel portfolio via Metso acquisition

6 Jan 2026 17:03 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
SMS group finalized the purchase of Metso’s ferrous technology units across Germany, China, India, and Australia. This integration adds sintering and pelletizing capabilities to the company's existing offerings, creating a comprehensive source for sustainable ironmaking.

By merging Metso’s Circored™ technology with its own Open Bath Furnace, SMS group now provides a hydrogen-based process that utilizes lower-grade iron ore fines instead of expensive high-grade pellets.

This expansion provides customers with solutions for low-emission steel production. Besides new equipment, the deal enhances global service networks for plant repairs and modernizations. These combined engineering resources aim to accelerate the adoption of cost-effective, carbon-neutral manufacturing processes while offering flexible feedstock options for metallurgical plants worldwide.
