Algoma Steel has begun shutting down its primary operations, ending more than a century of steelmaking using blast furnaces and coal-based processes. The shutdown of coke-making assets started last week, with ironmaking and basic oxygen furnace operations set to follow in the coming days, the company said.
A dedicated project team has been assigned to ensure the decommissioning is carried out safely. The move marks the end of Algoma Steel’s history as a conventional integrated steel producer and the transition to electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking.
The company said the shift is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about three million metric tons annually. Algoma is currently producing steel from EAF No.2, which began operating in mid-2025, while construction of EAF No.1 continues. Both furnaces are expected to be fully operational later this year.
