EU prepares retaliatory measures as Trump threatens tariffs over Greenland dispute

European Union ambassadors agreed to step up efforts to dissuade U.S. President Donald Trump from imposing tariffs on European allies, while preparing retaliatory measures if duties proceed, EU diplomats said.

Trump announced previously that he would impose rising tariffs from February 1 on EU members Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland, as well as Britain and Norway, until the U.S. is allowed to buy Greenland.

EU leaders will discuss responses at an emergency summit in Brussels. Options include tariffs on EUR93 billion (US$107.7 billion) of U.S. imports, set to trigger automatically on February 6 after a six-month suspension, or the rarely used Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI), which could restrict U.S. access to public tenders, investments, banking, or services, including digital.
