Tata Steel Nederland launches new packaging steel line using TCCT technology

Tata Steel Nederland (TSN) commissioned a new production line for packaging steel for the food industry, featuring its proprietary Trivalent Chromium Coating Technology (TCCT). The technology significantly reduces the environmental impact of production and already complies with future European chemical regulations, including REACH requirements.

TSN is the exclusive developer and patent holder of TCCT and is offering the technology to other European steelmakers, positioning it as a new standard for Europe’s packaging steel market. The new line centralizes the entire production process at a single location, simplifying logistics and shortening the supply chain.

When combined with Protact’s polymer-coated packaging steel solution, TCCT meets stringent food safety standards while eliminating the need for additional customer-applied coatings. This reduces costs, lowers chemical use, and streamlines production. Arne Hoogerhorst, head of TSN’s Packaging division, said the technology improves workplace safety and reduces environmental risks.

Separately, Tata Steel has signed a non-binding letter of intent with the Dutch government to transition to low-carbon steel production at its Eemhaven plant, a project estimated at EUR4-6.5 billion, with EUR2 billion in state support.
