Latest customs data shows iron and steel accounted for 98% of goods declared under the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) in its first week. The remaining 2% included fertilizers, cement, aluminum, electricity, and hydrogen.

Major supplying countries were Turkey, China, India, Canada, Taiwan, and Vietnam, while Belgium, Spain, Romania, the Netherlands, France, and Germany were the top importers within the EU.

The system is running smoothly overall, with real-time data links between customs offices enabling 10,483 automated declarations in the first week. Some minor delays occurred at ports due to documentation issues.

Over 4,100 companies have already registered as CBAM declarants. The European Commission views the rollout as successful, showing climate policies can be implemented without major trade disruption.

While the initial phase has been stable, the full impact of the carbon tariff will become clearer over time as more data becomes available.
