US steel industry applauds China tariff impact

Recent years have seen a remarkable revival in the US steel industry, with Mississippi County now recognized as the nation's leading steel-producing county. Key industry figures attribute much of this growth to tariffs imposed on Chinese steel and aluminum in 2018.

At a recent "State of the Steel Industry" meeting convened by the Congressional Steel Caucus, leaders from major producers unanimously praised the tariffs for boosting domestic production. US Representative Rick Crawford, who chairs the caucus, contrasted today's optimism with the pre-2018 era, when he felt America was surrendering its industrial capacity.

While China remains the world’s top steel exporter, US executives argue the tariffs have been effective. They also call for stricter trade enforcement, including tighter "melt and pour" origin rules to counter circumvention.

This resurgence is fueling local expansion. Following the acquisition of U.S. Steel by Japan’s Nippon, a new mill is operational in Osceola, and a direct reduced iron plant is planned. Nearby, Hybar's new rebar mill is now fully running, with a second facility already in the works.

Mississippi County alone produced roughly 13% of the nation's steel in 2024, directly employing about 5,000 workers and supporting thousands more.
