Australia probes fabricated structural steel import surge

27 Jan 2026 16:15 reported by Joy Liu

The Australian Productivity Commission (PC) opened a safeguard investigation on January 23, 2026, targeting fabricated structural steel imports. This action responds to an application from the Australian Steel Institute, which claims a surge in foreign products threatens the domestic industry. The inquiry focuses on steel classified under tariff subheadings 730810 and 730890.

Under World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, the PC acts as the authority to determine if emergency protections are necessary. A preliminary paper is expected to be issued in February 2026, with public submissions due by March/April 2026. An interim report will be available by September 2026, before the government receives the final findings in November 2026.

These measures aim to address possible serious injury to local manufacturers caused by increased import volumes.
