SMS group opened its second Indian production facility in Sanand near Ahmedabad on January 21, 2026, with a grand ceremony attended by over 250 political and business leaders. 

The 80,000-square-meter plant will employ around 160 SMS staff and up to 400 contractors to manufacture equipment for flat and long product processing and forging technology, with the capacity to handle components up to 125 tons. 

Together with SMS's first Indian facility in Bhubaneswar (opened in 2014), the Sanand plant creates a complementary manufacturing ecosystem that strengthens SMS's position as a supplier in India's rapidly growing steel market. 

The investment supports India's goal of doubling steel production from 150 million to 300 million tons annually in the coming years, according to CFO Fabíola Fernandez and APAC & MEA CEO Marco Asquini. 

The facility's strategic location in western India's industrial hub places SMS close to its customer base and reinforces the company's commitment to delivering German-quality engineering with local presence and reliability.
