UK considers lowering duty-free steel imports

29 Jan 2026 11:01 reported by Vicky Wang

The UK is reviewing its duty-free steel import quotas, which expire in June, to protect domestic producers amid global oversupply.

Steel imports above the quota are subject to a 25% tariff. A government decision is expected in April and could take effect on July 1.

Tata Steel UK calls for stricter, demand-based quotas to prevent cheap steel from flooding the market. Industry groups warn that without new protections, domestic producers, including British Steel and Speciality Steel, may face significant pressure.

Rising exports from China, Vietnam, South Korea, and Turkey increase competition, while past US and EU tariffs continue to influence trade patterns.
