Switzerland seeks exemption from EU steel import measures

Switzerland is officially seeking an exemption from the European Union’s planned protective measures regarding steel imports. According to a government statement, Swiss officials initiated a special meeting with EU representatives in Brussels last week to address these trade barriers.

The Swiss government maintains that its domestic steel production does not contribute to global overcapacity. Instead, they argue that Swiss steel is vital for regional supply chains and the broader European industrial ecosystem.

Beyond steel, Switzerland is also pushing for exemptions from EU import restrictions on specific manganese and silicon-based alloys, known as ferroalloys. Furthermore, Swiss delegates expressed concern regarding potential EU restrictions on the export of aluminum scrap.
