UMB Steel teams up with SMS to launch Europe’s first continuous mill technology for sustainable steel

UMB Steel s.r.l., a Bucharest-based steelmaker, commissioned SMS group to supply Europe’s first Continuous Mill Technology (CMT® 700) at its Oțelu Roșu site in Romania. The new long products mill will operate in a continuous endless process within the existing steel complex, aiming for minimal carbon emissions and high production efficiency. UMB Steel plans to use the mill primarily to support the group’s highway construction operations.

The CMT® 700 will produce around 700,000 tons annually of straight bars, compact coils, and wire rod. SMS will deliver mechanical, electrical, and automation systems to integrate the new caster and rolling mill into the current plant. The technology allows uninterrupted production from scrap, feeding cast products directly from the meltshop to the rolling mill.

The mill will cut CO₂ emissions by up to 30% by eliminating the need for natural gas in billet reheating. Features include VCC® coils up to eight tons, a wire rod line, a straight bar finishing area, and advanced systems like TBK REBARgauge for dimensional control. This first collaboration with SMS strengthens UMB Steel’s role in Romania’s long products market and promotes sustainable steel production.
