The Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) has urged the US House Subcommittee on Energy to take action to ensure affordable and reliable electricity supplies to support domestic manufacturing growth. 

Representing the electric arc furnace (EAF) steel sector, SMA said power costs are among the industry’s largest operating expenses, with individual mills typically requiring 40 to 200 megawatts. To foster growth in the American steel industry and manufacturing overall, policymakers need to speed up the implementation of new generation and transmission infrastructure. 

SMA highlighted the critical role of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in overseeing grid reliability amid surging demand from industry and data centers. Reshoring success depends on FERC balancing regulations and improving energy infrastructure permits. Steel manufacturers seek to collaborate with Congress and the Trump Administration to expand American energy, supporting local communities and industrial growth.
