Nippon Steel selects Tenova & GE Vernova for world-record electric arc furnace at Yawata works

9 Feb 2026 13:57 reported by Joy Liu

A A A
Nippon Steel Corporation will install the world’s most powerful Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) at its Kyushu Works, Yawata Area.

This record-breaking Tenova Consteel® EAF has a 340-ton heat size. To support this scale, GE Vernova will provide two 33 kV Direct Feed systems and two 180 MVA transformers.

The unprecedented power of this furnace allows Nippon Steel to use high percentages of virgin iron units. This capability is necessary for the production of high-quality steel grades. Besides technical performance, the project meets Japan’s Green Transformation (GX) Promotion Act and the company’s 2050 carbon neutrality goal.

By replacing blast furnace production with advanced EAF steelmaking, the company advances its long-term decarbonization strategy.

GE Vernova’s service scope includes the engineering, delivery, and installation supervision of the power systems, reactors, and associated electrical equipment.
