Hyundai Motor Group announced that Hyundai Steel has begun mass production of low-carbon steel sheets using a hybrid production process combining blast furnace molten metal with electric arc furnace operations. The new production route reduces carbon emissions by around 20% compared with conventional blast furnace products.

Development and testing started in 2023 at the Dangjin plant, with the company securing certification for 25 steel types following quality and performance evaluations.

Initial supply will focus on automotive applications, with Hyundai Motor and Kia planning to adopt the low-carbon steel in selected domestic and European models.

Beyond the automotive sector, Hyundai Steel is also advancing low-carbon heavy plate for offshore wind foundations, aiming to expand its presence in global energy and infrastructure markets.
