Norwegian low-carbon steel firm Blastr bids for Speciality Steels UK

23 Feb 2026 16:19 reported by Lewis Zhang

A Norwegian green steel group, Blastr, is among a small number of bidders seeking to acquire Speciality Steels UK (SSUK), Britain’s third-largest steel producer, which entered compulsory liquidation about six months ago.

SSUK operates major sites in Rotherham and Sheffield and employs more than 1,000 people, making it an important part of the UK steel sector.

Blastr, led by industry veteran Mark Bula, is aiming to build a low-carbon iron and steel value chain across the UK and Europe through strategic acquisitions.

As part of the potential deal, the company is reportedly considering relocating its holding company from Norway to the UK. However, rival bidders remain in the process, and while a preferred buyer could be selected within weeks, there is no certainty that a final agreement will be reached.
