Trump loses tariff case; 50% steel and aluminum duties unaffected

24 Feb 2026 15:40 reported by Lena Yang

On February 20, the US Supreme Court ruled that President Donald Trump exceeded his authority in imposing reciprocal tariffs of 10% to 50% on goods from multiple trading partners, striking down the country-specific measures in a 6-to-3 decision.

The ruling does not affect the 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum, which were imposed under Section 232 and fall outside the scope of the case.

Following the decision, Trump announced a new 10% global tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 and said his administration would launch investigations under Section 301 to address unfair trade practices.
