Colombia implements 35% steel tariff on non-FTA imports to protect local industry

Colombian President Gustavo Petro signed Decree 0264 of 2026, raising tariffs to 35% on 14 categories of steel and metal products from countries without free trade agreements.

This measure will become effective around April 1. Previously, duties on these goods ranged between 0% and 10%.

The new rate covers a wide range of materials, including bars, profiles, tubes, wire, and barbed wire, as well as nails, staples, and other iron, steel, and aluminum products.

The government acted after data showed imports from non-FTA regions surged over 290% in some sectors. While imports from multiple countries are affected, specific analysis noted that Chinese steel prices were up to 42% below market rates.

By applying the maximum rate permitted under WTO rules, Colombia aims to restore fair competition and protect its local jobs.
