U.S. Steel successfully restarted Blast Furnace B at its Granite City Works in Illinois to address rising customer demand. The facility returned to active steel production after a restart process that began in December 2025. To support the renewed furnace operations, the company hired around 400 employees as part of its standard business planning.

President and CEO David B. Burritt said that the restart required thorough preparation to ensure safe and reliable performance within the competitive steel industry.

The company remains focused on collaborating with the United Steelworkers and local leaders to maintain safety standards at the site. This move brings one of the facility's two furnaces back online, allowing the company to meet its output with current market requirements.
