Digital intelligence as key to China’s urgent steel supply chain transformation

China's steel supply chain faces urgent transformation. With annual crude steel output of 960 million tons and logistics volumes reaching up to 10 billion tons, outdated management marked by information silos and fragmented processes has become a major bottleneck. Digital and intelligent solutions are no longer optional — they are essential.

Currently, most steel mills remain at an early stage of logistics digitalization. Logistics is still undervalued as a "third profit source," and different systems operate in isolation, leading to low efficiency. A three-level approach is needed: a clear strategy, process alignment, and an integrated platform connecting commercial, informational, logistical, and financial flows.

Targeted solutions exist for road, rail, water, and warehouse operations, from real-time vehicle tracking to digital twin technology for hot metal transfer between ironmaking and steelmaking. These systems help streamline transportation, warehousing, and settlements.

The benefits are tangible: logistics costs per ton of steel can drop significantly, truck waiting times shorten, and unnecessary handling is reduced. In the long run, China's steel supply chain will become smarter and greener, achieving both cost savings and sustainable growth.
