ArcelorMittal Dofasco retires No. 3 coke plant in Hamilton

ArcelorMittal Dofasco, a Canadian steel manufacturer, completed the decommissioning of its No. 3 coke plant on April 13, leaving only one operational coke battery at its Hamilton facility. This move is in line with the company’s 2021 announcement to phase out coal-derived fuel production.

According to a company spokesperson, employees from the unit are being reassigned to different roles within the organization. The closure represents a step toward reducing industrial greenhouse gas emissions in Ontario, where steel manufacturing remains a primary CO2 source.

ArcelorMittal Dofasco previously committed to transitioning toward direct reduced iron and electric arc furnaces by 2028, but recent updates indicate a long-term decarbonization timeline extending to 2050.

The company intends to maintain its remaining No. 2 plant in compliance with provincial environmental standards while pursuing future sustainability goals.
