Egypt-based steelmaker Suez Steel has set a new benchmark for energy-efficient direct reduced iron (DRI) production at its plant, which uses ENERGIRON Zero-Reformer (ZR) technology developed by Tenova and Danieli. This marks the first large-scale industrial application of this solution, enabling flexible gas-based reduction of iron ore pellets with high metallization rates and a compact design.

The plant operates with high metallization rates while ensuring direct hot feeding to the meltshop, optimizing production efficiency. Through continuous optimization, Suez Steel has consistently achieved natural gas consumption slightly below 2.2 Gcal per ton (8.73 MBTU/ton) for several months.

A recently commissioned captive pellet plant has also played a key role, supplying high-quality pellets with optimal reducibility to support stable and efficient DRI operations. These advancements highlight Suez Steel’s commitment to sustainable and cost-effective steel production.
