Mexico targets preemptive US trade deal ahead of USMCA review

21 Apr 2026 15:37 reported by Chloe Jiao

Mexico is aiming to reach a preliminary agreement with the US on key sectors, including steel, aluminum, and automobiles, ahead of the formal review of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

The Mexican president said these industries are crucial to the country’s economy, especially as Mexico is one of the largest exporters to the US.

The move comes as the US is expected to tighten rules of origin in order to prevent goods, particularly from China, from being routed through Mexico to enter the US market without tariffs. An early agreement could help stabilize trade flows and reduce uncertainty ahead of the upcoming formal negotiations.
