SAIL’s Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) selected SMS group for a turnkey modernization of its 2x6-strand, six-meter billet casters in Durgapur, West Bengal, India.

The project converts existing machines to a seven-meter radius, utilizing current civil foundations to minimize costs. Implementation takes place during ongoing plant operations, with each caster requiring a five-month shutdown.

The billet caster no. 1 is expected to commence service in the fourth quarter of 2027, with the second ready in the third quarter of 2028. Technical upgrades include a butterfly-type ladle turret, CONDRIVE mold oscillation drive, close casting facilities, CONSTIR mold stirrers, rigid type dummy bar, level 2 automation, and various safety systems.

These enhancements improve long product continuous casting capabilities for rebar and wire rod, enable 150x150-millimeter billet production, and provide a 60% output increase. Furthermore, the design adds 160-millimeter round capabilities for future production. This initiative reduces operational expenses and improves machine availability, maintaining the long-standing partnership between the two entities.
